WHAT’S WITH THE NAME?
Claudia Marcellis is actually my maiden name, which I still use day-to-day. Although not a typically Dutch name (my family hails from the very south of Holland between Germany and Belgium) it suits my noticeable accent and confirms that I am not a Brit, despite living here for over 15 years and being very fond of this country and its people.
WHERE DID IT ALL START FOR YOU?
I think it all started for me with my Grandmother. Despite being a farmer’s daughter, she was always immaculately presented with nice jewellery and hand-made dresses from high-quality material. Later, when I was studying, I took my first job in a large department store. I worked in the women’s clothing section and became hooked on the thrill of receiving gratitude from customers that I helped to dress. This has followed me ever since, working in various retail positions including helping to establish the Laundry Industry brand when it came from the Netherlands to London with branches in Notting Hill and Selfridges. Even when I spent some time working in recruitment, it was finding a role that really suited my candidates that gave me satisfaction.
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO SO MUCH?
Despite having such a keen interest in style, it is working with people on such a personal level that I enjoy the most. Being able to make people feel good about themselves in such a fun and positive way is a great thing to do for a living. After moving to the Hertford eight years ago where I knew noone, I started working in the Women’s Society boutique and met (and dressed) so many wonderful people. I am pleased to now be continuing that with my own personal styling services.
DO YOU HAVE ANY STANDARD TIPS FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO LOOK THEIR BEST?
Smile! Of course, that is easier said than done. On a purely clothing level, my advice is to only wear what makes you feel good. If it doesn’t feel right, take it off. Also, don’t try too hard and remember that “Less is more”. Oh, and only wear shoes that you can actually walk in.
BESIDES YOUR WORK, WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PASSIONS IN LIFE?
Quirky arthouse cinema, fine food, power walks, heated discussion, beautiful design, my daughter’s hair. Did I mention good food already?
